Individuals Struggling with Social Media Usage

Research shows that social media, gaming, and Internet use impact both mental and physical health. The impact can be positive and negative, depending on the circumstances and type of use. In my work with individuals and families, I support people to develop effective social media and screen time management plans to implement a healthy life balance where using platforms, devices and apps can be more helpful than harmful.

Common Difficulties Individuals Struggling with Social Media Usage Face

Social media and connecting online aren’t going anywhere, and it’s important to learn how to have a healthy relationship with the platforms you use. If you’re a parent, it’s also essential that you consider your child’s safety and wellness online.

  • Maybe you feel conflicted about how you use social media. On the one hand, you might like feeling connected to loved ones, expressing yourself creatively and finding inspiration. But, on the other hand, you may find yourself feeling insecure looking at other people’s lives, or experiencing FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). Or you might engage with doom-scrolling, where it feels like you can’t stop using social media, comparing your life to others, and causing you to neglect important parts of your life, such as being present.

  • Social media can be a tremendous asset for expressing yourself and building your reputation. However, many people struggle with portraying themselves as someone they are not, causing internal and external relationship conflict. Your online presence matters as it could be someone’s first impression of you.

  • Many individuals need help establishing limits on their screen time. This is especially true for children and teens, who are using social media more than ever, and may need their parents to play an essential role in regulating online activity and screen time use. However, you may not know what's right for yourself or your family when it comes to appropriate rules or the consequences associated with using or misusing certain apps. As a parent, you might be facing constant resistance from your child. It is easy to feel out of control when it comes to managing screen time, which can lead to feelings of anger and frustration.

  • Whether you’re a teen who feels bad about yourself after using social media or a college student concerned about creating a positive impression on potential employers, friends, and family, underlying factors like anxiety, low self-esteem, or depression may be impacting your online activity. Together, we’ll explore your goals, values and identify patterns of your thoughts, feelings and behaviors to build a meaningful and intentional relationship with social media, school, work, friends and your family.

How Therapy Can Help You Grow as an Individual Struggling with Social Media Usage

As the Founder of the SPACE Wellness Model, I developed a program to increase psychological well-being and personal health. This model is used to assess your “SPACE” - the social, academic, cognitive, emotional, and physical dimensions of your life impacted by social media. I use the five domains as the foundation to help you build healthy habits and positive behaviors if you wish to make changes in the following areas.

  • If you want to disconnect from technology without harming your social life, we can work together to explore how your use of social media can enhance meaningful interactions, effectively communicate, and develop positive relationships instead of limiting them. These skills are critical for building social intelligence, supportive social systems, and strong professional connections.

  • I will help you utilize technology and social media to enhance your physical health, exercise, sleep hygiene, and diet - all of which are critical lifestyle habits to maintaining healthy behaviors, and improving your performance abilities.

  • Technology can be especially effective with increasing your ability to learn, think creatively, and explore new skills and interests. Maximizing your potential for knowledge will help you further your life proficiencies and contribute to career advancement.

  • I will help you self-assess when to use technology and social media to engage your intellectual functioning, attention, memory, and focus. These skills are important for concentration, managing brain stimulation, and using technology intentionally.

  • I will assist you in using technology and social media to improve your mood, self-care, develop resilience and new coping skills. These skills are the basis for handling changes, managing emotions and investing in your mental health.
